Dan Skelton Strengthens Cheltenham Festival Roster with Significant Acquisition
Dan Skelton, the season's leading jumps trainer, has significantly enhanced his team for the upcoming Cheltenham Festival by purchasing a talented hurdler for £245,000. The acquisition marks a strategic move as Skelton prepares for one of horse racing's most prestigious events.
Glance At Midnight: A Promising Addition
The new addition to Skelton's string is Glance At Midnight, a six-year-old gelding previously owned and trained by Andrew Martin. This horse has demonstrated considerable potential, winning two of his seven starts under Martin's guidance. More impressively, Glance At Midnight boasts strong placed form behind two of the season's most exciting novice hurdlers.
In December, the gelding finished runner-up to Supreme Novices' Hurdle favourite Old Park Star. More recently, he secured second place again behind Act Of Authority, another promising novice trained by Nicky Henderson, in the Listed Sidney Banks at Huntingdon. These performances highlight the horse's competitive edge against top-tier competition.
The Purchase Process and Festival Entries
Andrew Martin decided to sell Glance At Midnight through the online platform GoffsGo, where the horse was ultimately knocked down to agent Ryan Mahon, who was acting on behalf of Skelton. The transaction culminated in the £245,000 purchase price, reflecting the horse's perceived value and potential.
Glance At Midnight comes with two valuable entries at the Cheltenham Festival: the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle and the Turners' Novices' Hurdle. These entries add immediate strategic value to Skelton's festival preparations, providing flexibility in race planning.
Agent and Owner Perspectives
Ryan Mahon expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating: "He's a nice horse with a nice pedigree. We've done well with Passing Glance in the past. He'll go back to Dan's and we'll have a think about the best route with him. He's got a nice profile and hopefully he'll be a nice horse over fences."
Mahon also praised the GoffsGo platform, noting: "GoffsGo was straightforward to use and very clear. There's plenty of information available - good videos, good detail - and it gives you confidence. I actually went to see the horse in person as well, but everything you need is there."
Andrew Martin, who had owned and trained Glance At Midnight since purchasing him as a foal five years ago, reflected on the sale: "It's been five years in the making, as we bought him as a foal. We always bought him with a view that we might sell him."
Martin, who trains locally to Cheltenham, added: "I didn't sell him as a store as he didn't meet his reserve and we decided to press on. He's shown plenty of ability, he's got a great temperament and a great way of going. The Skeltons have got a very nice horse. He's a perfect specimen and just absolutely lovely to deal with."
Regarding the timing of the sale, Martin concluded: "It felt like the right time to sell with two Cheltenham Festival entries. I'm really pleased with the way it's gone."
Strategic Implications for Cheltenham Festival
This acquisition represents a calculated investment by Dan Skelton as he builds his team for the Cheltenham Festival. With Glance At Midnight's proven form against top novices and dual festival entries, Skelton gains a versatile contender that could potentially excel in multiple events. The purchase underscores the competitive nature of festival preparations, where trainers strategically acquire talent to strengthen their chances against elite competition.
The transaction also highlights the growing role of digital platforms like GoffsGo in facilitating high-value horse sales, providing transparency and detailed information that supports confident purchasing decisions in the modern racing industry.
