Shelvey departed England in 2025 to join Arabian Falcons, a third-tier outfit in the United Arab Emirates. During the current season, he made eight appearances for the club as a player. However, he will now make a decisive switch to the touchline, embracing a new challenge in football management.
The Falcons currently sit third in the UAE Second Division and are actively pursuing promotion to the top flight this season. The club's leadership hopes that Shelvey's extensive experience at the highest levels of the game will prove instrumental in driving success from the dugout.
Shelvey's New Role and Club Ambitions
In his new position, Shelvey will oversee a squad that includes former Manchester United wonderkid Ravel Morrison. He will operate under the guidance of ex-Crystal Palace and Southampton winger Jason Puncheon, who serves as co-owner and Head of Football Operations following a recent change in ownership.
Speaking about his appointment, Shelvey expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity. "I'm excited to take on this challenge and lead the Falcons forward," he said. While consecutive promotions will be necessary to create a genuine opportunity for Club World Cup participation, the revamped management and ownership structure, spearheaded by Shelvey and Puncheon, could prove to be the decisive factor in achieving these lofty goals.

Throughout his playing career, Shelvey earned six caps for England between 2012 and 2015. He made 278 appearances in the Premier League, representing clubs such as Liverpool, Swansea City, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley. Notably, he featured 69 times for Liverpool during his tenure at Anfield.
Last year, Shelvey spoke candidly about his decision to leave England for the UAE, revealing he sought a "fresh start" after feeling disconnected from the current climate in the UK. "I've had my time," he reflected. "I'm happy and content. I'm just at the stage now where I want to enjoy football. It's about waking up, enjoying what I do, and spending time with my family."
He further elaborated on his personal views, stating, "If I'm honest, I don't want my children growing up in England any more. We're very lucky that we lived in a nice part of the UK, but where I'm from, originally, you can't have nice things in my opinion. I'd never wear a watch in London any more. You can't have your phone out in London, in my view. I just feel that the UK isn't what it was 10 to 15 years ago."
