Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted that Alexander Isak appears likely to leave the club this summer, but insisted that no individual is bigger than the Magpies. The former striker's comments come after the Sweden international informed the club of his desire to explore a move away from St James' Park.
Isak, who has three years remaining on his contract, has yet to sign an improved deal. Newcastle have repeatedly stated that the 25-year-old is not for sale and value him at well over £100 million. However, Shearer fears the striker's departure is becoming increasingly probable, with Liverpool emerging as the most likely destination.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer dismissed Newcastle's explanation that Isak missed the pre-season tour due to a minor thigh injury as 'ridiculous'. He said the club should have been straightforward with supporters, adding: 'If someone is prepared to pay north of £150 million, and if he really wants to go, you can't stand in his way.'
Shearer urged head coach Eddie Howe to use all his persuasive powers to convince Isak to stay for at least another year, but acknowledged that if the player insists on leaving, the club must secure the best possible fee and rebuild. 'There's no individual bigger than the football club,' he emphasised.
Isak, who scored 27 goals last season, has been a key figure for Newcastle since his arrival from Real Sociedad. The club are reportedly considering RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko as a potential replacement should the Swede depart.
