Benjamin Sesko has vowed to get even better for Manchester United having finally overcome his fitness issues. The striker joined the Red Devils last year in a £66m move from RB Leipzig.
The 23-year-old scored 12 goals in all competitions across his debut campaign but battled with injury throughout, having been limited to just 19 starts. Sesko has, however, begun the new campaign slightly brighter with two goals already despite having only started once under Michael Carrick.
Overcoming a nagging injury
He has now explained that a slight niggle blighted him last term but, having recovered and worked on his fitness throughout the summer, he is now ready to be United's main man on the goals front.
Speaking with The Athletic, he said: "Basically I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit overload for myself.
"It just needed a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early it might appear again and I think it was a great decision to wait a little longer and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was just to make sure that it doesn't get worse."
Ready for the derby
He added: "I had quite some time from the injury that I could gain some muscle. I lost already so much [size] because I was overweight with muscles and I couldn't really move so much. But now I feel very good and I think I'm in the right place at the moment.
"The more games I'm getting, the more comfortable I feel, the more free I feel in the game. For me focus is all scoring goals, to provide everything for this club but then also certain things, whether that's link-up play, or this little bit that can be all-around, I think it would just come in time."
Sesko will certainly be aiming to continue his hot form this weekend as United come against bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Carrick on his attacking options
Asked about his decision on who will lead the line, boss Michael Carrick said: "It's obvious they [Sesko and Matheus Cunha] have different strengths. I think there are principles of what we're trying to achieve as a team and the way we're trying to play, which hopefully don't change too much with personnel, but it definitely gives us different options, if that makes sense.
"We still want to play a certain way and try certain things, but there's a different threat to Ben, Matheus, Bryan [Mbeumo], Marcus [Rashford] or whoever is up there. So, it depends a little bit on the opposition, a little bit on the balance of our team and certain things we want to attack, certain spaces, or whatever that may be.
"Sometimes it's in possession; sometimes it's without the ball and certain things we've got to defend, certain areas. So there's quite a bit that goes into it."
