Sergio Garcia Breaks Silence on LIV Golf Collapse Rumours Before Mexico Event

Sergio Garcia has publicly addressed swirling rumours about the potential collapse of LIV Golf, stating that players have received no official information regarding the breakaway league's future. This revelation comes just hours before the start of the LIV Golf Mexico City tournament, where the league's survival is reportedly hanging by a thread.

Players Kept in the Dark Amid Mounting Uncertainty

The Spanish golfer, a prominent figure in the LIV Golf roster, made these comments during a press conference ahead of the Mexico event. Garcia explained that players are relying on assurances given at the beginning of the year by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which bankrolls the league.

"We have not heard anything... That is not what Yasir told us at the beginning of the year, that he is behind us, that they have a project of many years," Garcia stated. He added, "Then sincerely, you already know there are already many rumours and I cannot comment anything more to you than what we know."

Emergency Meetings and Executive Absences Fuel Speculation

Reports have emerged that LIV Golf competition staff were summoned to an emergency summit in New York, while executives were seen in intense discussions beneath the Big Oak Tree at Augusta National last week. Notably, none of LIV's top executives were present at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City for the tournament, further fuelling concerns.

This development follows a period of significant turbulence for LIV Golf, which launched in 2022 with substantial financial backing from the PIF. The league initially attracted high-profile players like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm with lucrative offers, but has since seen defections including Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed returning to the PGA Tour.

Tournament Proceeds Amidst Growing Doubts

Despite the uncertainty, LIV Golf has proceeded with the Mexico City event, the sixth tournament of its fifth season. The pairings and tee times have been announced, featuring prominent names including Cameron Smith, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Bryson DeChambeau.

The league recently underwent significant changes, abandoning its signature 54-hole format in an attempt to gain Official World Golf Ranking points. However, this move has only resulted in limited eligibility for players finishing in the top ten of sanctioned events.

Analysts Predict Imminent Demise

Following a challenging week for LIV players at the Masters, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee suggested the league might be facing its final days. On social media platform X, Chamblee criticised LIV's format, team concept, and viewership numbers, questioning whether Saudi backers might "finally euthanized the whole lame-brained tour."

Industry insiders suggest that greater clarity about LIV Golf's future is expected by mid-afternoon in Mexico, potentially providing answers to the mounting questions surrounding the controversial golf league's viability.
