Scheffler Dismisses McIlroy Rivalry Ahead of PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler has downplayed the significance of a head-to-head battle with Rory McIlroy ahead of the PGA Championship, insisting he does not require external motivation. The world number one is preparing to compete at Aronimink Golf Club, where he aims to secure his fifth major title.

Scheffler's Internal Drive

Speaking to reporters, Scheffler emphasised that his motivation comes from within. "I would not say that it drives me," he said when asked about the prospect of facing McIlroy. "My sources of motivation have always been internal." He credited his parents and coach Randy for never pushing him to achieve greatness but instead encouraging him to focus on improvement.

"For me, getting better at golf is such an interesting and fun thing to try to accomplish. You're always toeing the line between getting better and getting worse," Scheffler explained. He added that he loves the challenge of practising alone and figuring out how to improve.

Competitive Spirit

Despite his internal focus, Scheffler acknowledged that he enjoys competition and dislikes losing. "I also love competition. I don't like losing," he said. However, he clarified that his preparation is not driven by thoughts of rivals. "I'm not thinking about something that somebody else is really good at. I'm seeing how something that I'm doing and how I can get better at that."

McIlroy's Injury Concerns

Meanwhile, McIlroy's preparation has been hampered by a blister on his toe, which forced him to cut short a practice round after just three holes. The Northern Irishman was seen limping during the Truist Championship and has been managing the issue ahead of the tournament. This could deprive fans of a long-awaited head-to-head between the two top players, who have claimed four of the last five major championships between them.

Scheffler's Past at the PGA Championship

Scheffler arrives at Aronimink with fond memories of his victory at Quail Hollow last year, but also with a reminder of a dramatic incident two years ago at the 2024 PGA Championship. He was arrested on the morning of his second round after allegedly failing to comply with a traffic stop at Valhalla Golf Club, though charges were later dropped.

Opening Round Grouping

Scheffler will tee off in the opening round on Thursday, May 14, grouped alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose. The tournament promises to be a thrilling contest, with or without a direct clash between the world's best.
