Olympic Icon Sam Quek Set for Super Bowl Spotlight Amid Personal Revelations
Olympic gold medal winner Sam Quek is poised to take centre stage as a presenter for Channel 5's coverage of Super Bowl LX, marking another milestone in her burgeoning broadcasting career. The highly anticipated sporting event will see the Seattle Seahawks clash with the New England Patriots for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy in San Francisco.
Versatile Broadcaster Expands Her Repertoire
Quek, aged 37, will share presenting duties with the esteemed Dermot O'Leary, further solidifying her reputation as one of Britain's most adaptable and respected sports broadcasters. Since securing gold with Team GB's hockey squad at the Rio 2016 Olympics, she has adeptly transitioned into covering a diverse array of sports, including horse racing and rugby union, alongside her commentary roles at recent Olympic Games.
Beyond the realm of sports, Quek has become a familiar and beloved face on popular television programmes, having appeared on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, Strictly Come Dancing, and Celebrity Masterchef. As the Super Bowl approaches, attention turns to her life away from the cameras, revealing a narrative of personal challenges, family joy, and professional success.
Family Life and Strictly Come Dancing Jealousy
Quek shares two children, Molly and Isaac, with her husband, Tom Mairs, a successful property developer. She has openly admitted that Mairs likely experienced pangs of jealousy during her participation in Strictly Come Dancing, as he harbours a long-standing desire to appear on the BBC programme himself.
Before starring in the 2024 series, Quek revealed, "My husband is genuinely really excited for me because he knows how much I'm going to enjoy it. And I think that's what's really special about our relationship. We are solid and I can't wait to share this with him." She added, "He might even be a bit jealous, if I know Tom. He would love to be out there doing it. We're always the couple at a wedding who are the last off the dance floor."
Discussing the challenge of performing sultry routines on the show, Quek confessed, "I'm not sexy. I can't do the sexy eyes, the body language. So I think that will be a challenge to tap into that side of me. If I try to do it, I'll have to try not to laugh. I was on BBC Breakfast and was trying to show [presenter] Naga Munchetty my sexy face and he [Tom] texted me, saying, 'Almost!'"
Personal Health Scares and Emotional Challenges
Quek has faced significant personal health challenges, including a miscarriage before falling pregnant with her eldest daughter, Molly, an experience she revealed "took its toll" on both her and her husband. Consequently, she chose to keep her pregnancy with Molly private until she was six months along.
She also endured a frightening moment ahead of the birth of her son, Isaac, when she was rushed to hospital a week before her due date. Speaking to OK! Magazine, she recalled, "I woke up and felt a bit of a twinge. Those twinges gradually grew stronger and stronger and turned into contractions. I'd been having recurring nightmares that if this birth went to a C-section, I was going to haemorrhage. I just felt like something was going to go wrong for this one, I don't know why. Naturally, when you're pregnant and see blood, it's never a good sign."
The consultant advised an emergency C-section, stating, "Just to be safe, we're going to whisk you down for an emergency C-section. We don't want to take the chance that it could be anything sinister, so we would advise getting him out." Following the operation, Quek was overwhelmed with emotion upon meeting her newborn son. She remembered, "When his little face popped up over the curtain, it was the realisation that he'd finally got here, was safe and was going to join our family of three to make it four."
Substantial Net Worth and Entrepreneurial Success
Through a combination of endorsement deals stemming from her hockey achievements, her prolific broadcasting work, and appearances on celebrity television shows, Quek has accumulated an estimated net worth of £4 million. Her husband, Tom Mairs, also possesses considerable wealth, having reportedly received a £1 million gift from his father upon completing his education and launching Antona Student Properties.
Mairs has since carved out his own reputation as a successful entrepreneur and previously appeared on the Channel 4 programme Secret Millionaire. Together, they represent a power couple balancing high-profile careers with a strong family unit, as Quek continues to excel in her role as a leading sports broadcaster while navigating the complexities of personal life.
