Sam Kerr to Lead Matildas in Kenya as Squad Eyes 2027 World Cup
Sam Kerr has been confirmed as captain for the Matildas' upcoming international friendlies in Kenya, where Australia will participate in the inaugural women's FIFA Series. The squad, announced by head coach Joe Montemurro, features 22 players and represents a near full-strength lineup as the team builds momentum towards the 2027 Women's World Cup.
Montemurro Seeks Higher-Calibre Opposition
Despite the selection of key players, Montemurro expressed a desire for the Matildas to face more elite competition in their World Cup preparations. Australia's first match is against 153rd-ranked Malawi on 11 April, followed by a game against either India (67th) or hosts Kenya (134th).
"The Asian Cup set a benchmark for us," Montemurro stated, referencing Australia's recent 1-0 loss to Japan in the Women's Asian Cup final. "Playing against Top 10 or Top 15 nations with differing styles will be critically important leading into the World Cup."
He acknowledged the current fixtures offer limited high-quality opposition but emphasised the value of understanding African football dynamics.
Squad Selections and Notable Absences
The squad sees the return of stalwarts including Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley, Hayley Raso, Alanna Kennedy, and Mackenzie Arnold. However, several Asian Cup squad members will miss the Kenya trip.
Striker Mary Fowler, right-back Ellie Carpenter, and midfielder Katrina Gorry are among the seven players rested, with Kyra Cooney-Cross unavailable due to personal reasons. Montemurro explained Fowler's omission was due to her heavy minutes post-ACL recovery, while Carpenter needs a break before Champions League commitments.
Melbourne City midfielder Leticia McKenna earns her first senior call-up, with defender Jessika Nash and Central Coast Mariners midfielder Isabel Gomez returning to the national setup after missing the Asian Cup.
Fixture Details and Broader Context
The Matildas will face Malawi in Nairobi on 11 April (kick-off 2pm local/9pm AEST), with a second match against India or Kenya on 15 April. These friendlies mark Australia's first involvement in the women's FIFA Series, a new initiative designed to enhance global football competition.
Montemurro highlighted the squad's motivation despite the recent Asian Cup heartbreak, noting the experience against Japan has solidified their standards. The coach's comments underscore a strategic focus on long-term development, balancing immediate fixtures with the need for tougher tests ahead of the 2027 World Cup on home soil.
