Mamadou Sakho, the former Liverpool defender, has risked provoking the ire of iconic manager Jurgen Klopp by suggesting that the full truth behind his Anfield departure will eventually come to light. The French centre-back, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 for £18 million, became the club's most expensive defensive signing at the time, but his tenure was marked by dramatic highs and lows.
A Turbulent Liverpool Career
Sakho's initial season at Liverpool nearly culminated in the Reds securing their first Premier League title in nearly a quarter of a century. However, his involvement was limited to just 18 league appearances as the team's defence conceded 50 goals, a critical factor in their ultimate failure. Despite early promise, Sakho faced persistent criticism and never fully won the confidence of then-manager Brendan Rodgers.
Klopp's Arrival and Subsequent Fallout
Following Rodgers' departure in October 2015 and Jurgen Klopp's appointment, Sakho initially earned the trust of the new German boss. Yet, this rapport quickly deteriorated. In 2016, Sakho was infamously sent home from Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States after a series of disciplinary breaches, including arriving late for the team flight, a dinner, and a treatment session while recovering from injury.
Klopp's tolerance had evidently expired, leading to Sakho's demotion to the Under-23s squad. He never featured for the first team again, marking one of the manager's most severe punishments during his illustrious reign at Anfield. Klopp publicly addressed the incident, emphasising a lack of respect, though he downplayed its severity at the time.
Sakho's Perspective on the Controversy
In a 2025 interview, Sakho maintained that he shared a good relationship with Klopp and admired his football philosophy. He questioned the justification for his exile, remarking that minor infractions, such as being three minutes late for a meal, should not warrant such drastic consequences. The defender hinted at deeper, undisclosed reasons behind his exit, promising to reveal all in a future documentary about his career.
"Small things are always good to take as an excuse. But the reality wasn't this," Sakho stated. "I will speak about it one day, of course. When I do my documentary of my career and of my life, all the truth will go out in that moment."
Life After Liverpool
Sakho departed Anfield in January 2017, securing a loan move to Crystal Palace. His impressive performances in south London prompted the Eagles to break their transfer record, signing him permanently for £25 million that summer. After leaving Palace in 2022, Sakho had spells at Montpellier and Torpedo Kutaisi in Georgia before retiring earlier this year, concluding a colourful and eventful professional journey.
As Liverpool prepare to face PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals, Sakho's comments add a layer of intrigue to the club's recent history, reminding fans of the unresolved tensions that occasionally surface in elite football.
