Wrexham's recent run of three consecutive league defeats, coupled with an FA Cup exit, has raised doubts over their automatic promotion hopes. However, co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have publicly backed head coach Phil Parkinson, who has credit in the bank after guiding the club back to the EFL.
The Red Dragons' 3-1 loss to Bradford City marked their third league defeat in a row, dropping them to fifth in League Two. Despite the slump, Reynolds and McElhenney have previously expressed admiration for Parkinson, with Reynolds calling him 'our gaffer' in a social media post last April.
Following the Bradford defeat, Reynolds tweeted: 'The entire Bradford City squad played with so much heart today. Congrats. We have all the tools. Just need to put it together.' McElhenney added: 'Outstanding as always.' The owners' support reflects Parkinson's track record, having secured 15 wins in the club's first 29 games back in the fourth tier.
Julian Rhodes, chairman of Parkinson's former club Bradford, also backed him to reverse the slump. 'He’s one of those who never gets too high when things are going well and never gets too low when it goes in the other direction,' Rhodes told The Athletic. 'Perfect for Bradford City, and I’d imagine perfect for Wrexham in their attempts to win another promotion.'
With 20 games remaining and games in hand, Wrexham still have time to recover. Parkinson’s calm approach and the owners' faith suggest the club expects a turnaround.
