Russell Wilson Claims Broncos Threatened to Bench Him Over Contract

Russell Wilson has revealed that the Denver Broncos threatened to bench him nearly two months ago if he did not agree to adjust his contract. The quarterback, speaking to the media for the first time since being demoted, said the ultimatum came during the bye week following a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on 29 October.

Wilson, who signed a five-year, $245m extension last year, said he was approached about restructuring his deal. The contract includes a clause guaranteeing $37m for the 2024 season if he passes a physical in March. Wilson refused to alter the terms, and weeks later, he has been benched in favour of Jarrett Stidham for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“It definitely hurt. It was a low blow for a bit,” Wilson said. “I came here for a reason, and that’s to win more championships.” The 35-year-old quarterback expressed disappointment at the timing, given the Broncos still have a slim chance of making the playoffs. Denver have lost three of their last four games after a five-game winning streak.

Coach Sean Payton said he was not involved in the contract discussions and that his decision to bench Wilson was purely football-related. “For me, where I’m at in my career, that’s all I’m interested in, is getting another win,” Payton said. Wilson, who has thrown for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns this season, said he will support Stidham and remains hopeful about his future with the team.
