Russell Beats Antonelli in Canadian GP Sprint, Takes Pole

George Russell secured pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli by just six-hundredths of a second in a gripping qualifying session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The result maintains Mercedes' perfect record of five poles from five races this season.

Earlier on Saturday, Russell won the sprint race, closing the championship gap to Antonelli to 18 points. The session was marred by a clash between the two drivers, with Antonelli accusing Russell of forcing him off track while battling for the lead. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff intervened to calm the situation, and the pair later resolved their differences behind closed doors.

Russell described his pole lap as coming "from nowhere" and emphasised the importance of the result. Antonelli, while still frustrated, stated "it's all good now" after discussions. The incident has raised questions about Mercedes' driver racing rules, reminiscent of the Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg rivalry in 2014.

McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualified third and fourth, with Lewis Hamilton fifth for Ferrari. Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar took sixth and seventh for Red Bull. The race on Sunday will see Russell and Antonelli start side by side on the front row, setting the stage for another intense battle.
