Antonio Rudiger Avoids Punishment Despite Knee to Face Incident
Real Madrid suffered a stunning defeat at the Bernabeu, but defender Antonio Rudiger dodged any punishment for a controversial knee to the face of Getafe's Diego Rico. VAR reviewed the challenge but did not recommend further action, leaving the referee to continue without issuing even a yellow card.
Controversial Challenge Escapes Scrutiny
During the match, Diego Rico was already on the ground after a tackle when Rudiger made a second challenge, dropping his knee into Rico's face. The ex-Chelsea defender's move looked nasty, yet it went unpunished, much to the disbelief of Getafe manager Jose Bordalas. Bordalas, who masterminded the victory, refused to comment directly but hinted at his frustration, stating, "Everyone saw it. But I won't talk about it. What we have to do is enjoy the victory."
Tempers Flare in Stoppage Time
The match saw tensions boil over late on, with two red cards issued in stoppage time. Real Madrid's Franco Mastantuono was sent off in the 95th minute for dissent, while Getafe's Adrian Liso received a second yellow card in the seventh minute of added time, leading to a clash between both sets of players on the touchline.
Real Madrid's Title Hopes Dented
The loss leaves Real Madrid four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race, after Martin Satriano's spectacular strike secured a shock win for Getafe, propelling them to 11th place. Real were visibly frustrated, especially with key players like Kylian Mbappe (knee sprain) and Jude Bellingham (thigh injury) sidelined. Despite the setback, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa remained defiant, saying, "There are 36 points left, and we have to fight for them. Nobody here will give up, this is Real Madrid. Four points is a gap we think we can bridge."
Arbeloa's Response to Criticism
Arbeloa acknowledged the team's shortcomings but defended their effort, adding, "We have great players, a great squad, and players who will recover and help us a lot. We can do things better on the pitch. I understand the criticism after a defeat like this. We created chances to score. Can we play better? That's also true. I can't criticise the effort of the players. It's my job to improve the play of the team." This defeat marks successive losses for Real Madrid, adding pressure as they aim to close the gap in the league standings.
