Twenty British passengers who were evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship following a hantavirus outbreak have been repatriated from Tenerife to the United Kingdom. The individuals arrived at Manchester Airport on Sunday evening via a chartered flight and were subsequently transported to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral for initial isolation measures.
Isolation Protocols
The passengers will undergo up to 72 hours of isolation at the managed facility. Public health specialists will later assess whether they can complete a 45-day self-isolation period at home. Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that none of the repatriated passengers are currently symptomatic.
Public Health Assessment
Health officials have stated that the risk of hantavirus to the general public is considered "really low" due to the virus requiring close contact for transmission. The World Health Organisation has reported six confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the ship, with three British nationals among the eight total cases. Two of these individuals are currently hospitalised abroad.
The repatriation marks a significant step in managing the outbreak, ensuring that affected individuals receive appropriate care while minimising any potential spread within the UK.
