Manchester United legend Roy Keane has been left red-faced after his criticism of Jonathan Woodgate's appointment as a coach at Old Trafford. Reports suggest the United dressing room have quickly taken to the former Real Madrid player under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
The Telegraph reports that Woodgate has had a positive influence on the squad. His fluency in Spanish is said to be appreciated by players who speak the language. One source claimed: 'He’s close with the players, he can have a laugh, but he has a bit of authority about him as well. He has that real understanding of what players want and need and what drives them.'
Keane slammed the coaching group appointed in January after United sacked Ruben Amorim, which included Woodgate, Steve Holland, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion. Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said: 'I'm more concerned with the appointment and the staff that have come in... Looking at the group of players they have, it is going to be a big ask.'
Despite Keane's doubts, United have improved dramatically under Carrick, currently on the Premier League's longest unbeaten run of 10 matches, with wins over Arsenal and Manchester City. Much of the improvement has been attributed to Carrick and his coaching staff.
