Chelsea Manager Rosenior Blasts VAR Decision in Leeds Draw
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior was left seething after discovering the rationale behind VAR's decision to uphold Leeds United's equaliser during a post-match interview following Tuesday's 2-2 stalemate at Stamford Bridge.
Blues Squander Lead Amid Controversial Goal
The Blues had established a comfortable two-goal advantage through strikes from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, only to see their lead evaporate after conceding twice within a six-minute spell in the second half. This result cost Chelsea the opportunity to overtake Manchester United and secure fourth place in the Premier League standings.
After Lukas Nmecha reduced the deficit for Leeds from the penalty spot, Noah Okafor netted a messy equaliser to level the scores, despite the ball appearing to make contact with Jayden Bogle's hand in the build-up to the goal.
VAR Review Sparks Managerial Outrage
VAR officials examined the incident and ultimately confirmed the goal, much to the dismay of Chelsea's players and Rosenior. During his conversation with TNT Sports reporter Olivia Buzaglo, Rosenior's frustration escalated when he learned that VAR had classified the handball as 'non-deliberate'.
Rosenior stated angrily: 'The rule is the rule. From my understanding, if there is any handball in the lead up to a goal, it should be disallowed. If they've said that, then someone explain the rules to me because they need to help the referee.'
He added: 'You saying that has got me angrier because that's unacceptable if they've come with that judgement.'
Rosenior Acknowledges Team's Defensive Lapses
Despite condemning VAR's reasoning as unacceptable, Rosenior conceded that his squad must accept responsibility for their collapse after 'switching off' during a critical phase of the match.
'Six minutes. Six minutes of switching off. We were in complete control of the game,' Rosenior remarked. 'I don't want to talk about the football we played, if we want to make sure we get to level where I think we can be, we've got to switch on for 90 minutes. It's as simple as that.'
He continued: 'I thought that some of the football we played was excellent and we should come away with three points. We give Leeds a point, gift them a point.'
Premier League and Fan Reactions
Shortly after Okafor's contentious equaliser was awarded, the Premier League Match Centre posted on social media: 'The referee's call of goal to Leeds United was checked and confirmed by VAR - with there deemed to be no handball offence by Bogle in the build-up.'
Supporters flocked to social media to voice their displeasure with the decision, which ended Chelsea's four-match winning streak in the Premier League. One fan exclaimed: 'How is that no handball? Are you okay? Not even a Chelsea fan but it's clear hand.'
Another supporter commented: '"Accidental handball". Chelsea have been robbed.' A third wrote: 'Clear handball leads to them gaining advantage in a scramble. Terrible, woeful, abysmal, abhorrent, horrific defending of course but this goal shouldn’t stand whatsoever.'
An additional post read: 'I have to say Chelsea were hard done by last night. How this wasn't given as a handball is comical, VAR is the laughing stock yet again.'
Looking Ahead for Chelsea
Chelsea will aim to return to winning form when they confront Hull City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, before hosting Burnley at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League the following weekend.
