Rory McIlroy left members of St. Enodoc Golf Club in Cornwall stunned when he arrived for a practice round alongside Shane Lowry and Luke Donald ahead of The Open Championship. The world number two, seeking his second Open title since 2014, played on the links course in Rock as part of his preparation for the final major of the year, which begins on July 16 at Royal Birkdale.
Surprise Visit to Cornwall
The club announced the trio's arrival on social media, sharing pictures of McIlroy, Lowry, and Donald on the course with the message: "Welcome to St. Enodoc, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Luke Donald." As news spread, a growing gallery of members and local golf fans gathered to watch. Lowry reshared the club's post and said: "Links golf season. Thanks to the members and staff @stenodocgolf for a great day."
McIlroy, the Masters champion this year, is aiming for his second Open victory and first since 2014. He faces stiff competition from world number one Scottie Scheffler, who defends his title at Royal Birkdale after winning at Royal Portrush last year. Other contenders include PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai, US Open champion Wyndham Clark, and English stars Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Chris Gotterup's Emotional Victory
At the John Deere Classic in Illinois, Chris Gotterup couldn't hold back the tears after firing a stunning nine-under-par final-round 62 to win his third PGA Tour title of the year. The 26-year-old American began the day five shots behind overnight leaders Lucas Glover and Lee Hodges but posted nine birdies in a bogey-free round to edge out Max Homa by one stroke.
Gotterup broke down during an interview with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis, with his older brother Patrick on his bag. He said: "I really like this tournament, they've been super nice to me, and to come out here and to have Patrick out here with me… it's just so awesome." As the tears flowed, he added: "For him to take time out this week and some PTO (paid time off), and hopefully he gets one more day of PTO tomorrow from work, but yeah, just so awesome, this tournament has been awesome to me. It's just a great week."
Gotterup finished on 20 under par, while Homa made eight birdies and one bogey for a final-round 64 to end on 19 under. Glover and Hodges both posted final rounds of 69 to finish tied for third alongside Ben Kohles.
Countdown to The Open
The 154th Open Championship begins July 16 at Royal Birkdale. Before that, many top players will compete in the Genesis Scottish Open in East Lothian, starting July 10. McIlroy, Lowry, and Donald's practice round in Cornwall highlights the varied preparations as the golf world converges on the UK for a major fortnight.
