Wayne Rooney has said he would 'love' to manage Manchester United or Everton one day, but will not leave his current role at Derby County while the club faces ongoing difficulties. The former England captain spoke at the premiere of his new Amazon documentary, Rooney, where he addressed his managerial ambitions.
Rooney, who has been in charge of Derby since November 2020, revealed he was offered the chance to interview for the Everton job recently but declined due to his commitment to the Rams. Derby are currently in administration and have been deducted 21 points this season, though they sit just four points from safety in the Championship. 'What type of person would I be if - at the first opportunity - I left them?' Rooney said.
The 36-year-old also gave his view on Manchester United's struggles, having seen the club try several managers since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. He believes United need to appoint someone and give them time to rebuild. 'They've tried everything... I really think they need to bring someone in and give them time,' Rooney said.
Rooney added that both Everton and Manchester United are 'clubs close to my heart' and he hopes to manage one of them in the future once his work at Derby is complete. For now, he remains focused on helping Derby avoid relegation.
