Wayne Rooney has named Viktor Gyokeres as one of his top three Premier League performers this season, alongside Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo. The Arsenal striker has scored six goals in 14 appearances since joining from Sporting Lisbon, but has faced criticism over his form and fitness.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, the Manchester United legend praised Gyokeres for his work-rate and determination. “Arsenal have been crying out for a new number nine for a few years now and he’s come in,” Rooney said. “His work-rate and his determination to hold up play and he’s obviously scoring a few goals as well.”
Rooney also singled out Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo. “Semenyo, I think he’s been brilliant for Bournemouth, carrying on his form from last season,” he said. “Bryan Mbeumo… I think he’s been really good for Manchester United, even after a difficult start to the season.”
Gyokeres has faced scrutiny from some pundits, with former Sweden international Stefan Schwarz suggesting he should lose weight. “He’s a strong, physical guy… hopefully he’ll start to create and score goals… and get a bit lighter because he’s a heavy player,” Schwarz told Hajper.
