Rooney Accuses Liverpool Players of Lack of Motivation

Rooney Questions Liverpool Players' Desire After PSG Defeat

Wayne Rooney has delivered a brutal assessment of Liverpool's players in the wake of their Champions League exit, casting doubt on their motivation under manager Arne Slot. The Reds were eliminated from Europe's premier competition after a 2-0 defeat at Anfield, with Ousmane Dembele scoring both goals to secure a 4-0 aggregate victory for Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool's Season Hangs in the Balance

This result means Liverpool cannot win any silverware this season and are now fighting to secure a top-five finish in the Premier League to guarantee Champions League qualification for next term. Currently occupying fifth position, Slot's team hold a four-point advantage over Chelsea and a five-point cushion over both Brentford and Everton.

The Merseyside club enter this weekend's derby against Everton having suffered four defeats in their last five matches, though three of those losses came against elite opposition in PSG and Manchester City. Rooney remains unconvinced about the squad's desire under Slot and believes the timing of the derby fixture is particularly unfortunate for the struggling Reds.

Rooney's Scathing Critique

"You need players who want to fight, and we've seen this Liverpool team all season not give as much as they can, I believe," Rooney stated emphatically. "And I think this derby game on Sunday is coming at the wrong time for Liverpool."

The former England captain's comments sparked a debate with fellow pundit Clarence Seedorf, the former AC Milan star who offered a contrasting perspective on the situation. Seedorf suggested that facing a major rival like Everton immediately after a Champions League disappointment could actually prove beneficial for Liverpool's players.

"I would disagree," Seedorf countered. "I think when we had moments of excellence as well in the Champions League, and you had a big team, a big game after, it would be so much easier to at least be emotionally involved in the right way. When you meet maybe a team mid-table after a defeat like this, I think it's so much harder."

The Dutch legend continued: "Of course you still need to do it, but mentally it was easier. I don't know about you, are you saying that you weren't motivated?"

Rooney responded firmly: "I was very motivated, but I'm saying I think some of these players aren't."

Slot Acknowledges Transitional Challenges

Following the defeat to PSG, manager Arne Slot was questioned about whether Liverpool could now focus on securing fifth place in the Premier League. The Dutch tactician acknowledged the club faces significant challenges as they navigate a transitional period.

"Of course," Slot confirmed regarding the importance of securing Champions League qualification. "That is what we have to play for now in the coming weeks. The good thing is Alex (Isak) is back, well able to make minutes."

Slot elaborated on the club's current situation: "Much has been said that the club is in a transition. The club has sold 8-10 players to make money to sign five or so very talented players. We have to sell to buy. We are losing some players on a free transfer."

The Liverpool manager remained optimistic about the future despite the current difficulties: "It is a big challenge in the summer but the club has shown this model works. As I said many times the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer."

Liverpool now face a critical period as they attempt to secure Champions League football for next season while managing a squad that Rooney believes lacks sufficient motivation under their current manager. The upcoming Merseyside derby against Everton represents a crucial test of character for Slot's players as they seek to prove their critics wrong.
