Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has declared that his 2007/08 squad would 'batter' the current Arsenal team, led by Mikel Arteta. The former striker made the remark in response to a question from ex-Arsenal forward Theo Walcott during an Amazon Prime interview.
Rooney's United side won the Premier League, Community Shield and Champions League that season, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring 42 goals across all competitions. Rooney himself netted 18 goals in 39 appearances. The current Arsenal team top the Premier League table by seven points and lead their Champions League group, while United sit fifth, 15 points adrift.
Walcott, who played against Rooney's United, described them as the best team he ever faced. However, when asked how Rooney's 2008 side would compare to the current Gunners, Rooney replied: 'Yeah, we'd batter them.' Walcott was visibly taken aback, laughing without an immediate comeback.
Arteta's Arsenal are in contention for a quadruple this season, seeking their first league title in 20 years. Rooney's blunt verdict adds spice to Sunday's Premier League clash between the two sides.
