Cristiano Ronaldo is facing urgent medical assessments to determine the severity of a muscle injury sustained during Al Nassr's 3-1 triumph over Al-Fayha on Saturday. The 41-year-old football icon, who missed a penalty in the match, was substituted with less than ten minutes remaining after signalling discomfort to the bench.
Visible Distress and Immediate Concerns
Ronaldo was visibly struggling as he exited the pitch, later seen with an ice pack on his leg while watching the remainder of the game from the sidelines. This development has sparked anxiety among Portugal supporters, with the World Cup merely three months away. The summer tournament is anticipated to be Ronaldo's record sixth and final World Cup appearance, heightening hopes that his latest injury is not serious.
Manager's Statement and Penalty Miss
Al-Nassr manager Jorge Jesus confirmed the situation, stating, 'Ronaldo suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff will urgently perform the necessary tests to determine his condition.' Earlier in the match, Ronaldo had an opportunity to give Al-Nassr the lead in the 12th minute following a foul on teammate Mohamed Simakan. After a four-minute delay, he stepped up but dragged his penalty shot wide of the left post.
This marked the 35th penalty miss in his illustrious career, with the Al-Nassr and Portugal captain now 35 goals shy of reaching the 1,000-goal milestone. Ronaldo has scored 181 penalties from a total of 216 attempts, resulting in a miss rate of just 16.2 percent.
Postponed Asian Champions League Fixtures
In related news, Al-Nassr's scheduled Asian Champions League Two quarter-final clash against United Arab Emirates side Al-Wasl this week has been postponed. This decision stems from ongoing tensions in the Middle East, following what former US President Donald Trump termed 'major combat operations' against Iran by the United States and Israel. Iran's retaliation included reported missile strikes targeting Israel and other Middle Eastern nations.
AFC's Official Announcement
The Asian Football Confederation issued a statement explaining, 'In light of the developing situation in the Middle East, the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 Round of 16 first-leg matches in the West Region, originally scheduled for March 2-3, 2026, will now be rescheduled.' Additionally, AFC Champions League Two and AFC Challenge League quarter-final first-leg matches involving West Region teams, set for March 3-4, 2026, are postponed indefinitely.
The AFC emphasised that matches involving clubs from the East Region will proceed as planned, adding, 'The AFC will continue to closely monitor this rapidly evolving situation and remains resolute in ensuring the safety and security of all players, teams, officials, and fans.'
