David Beckham, the former Manchester United and England icon, has shared details of an early-morning phone call from his son Romeo after Arsenal clinched the Premier League title. Romeo, a lifelong Arsenal supporter, ended a long wait to see his team win the league, prompting a jubilant call to his father at 7am on Wednesday.
Beckham posted on his Instagram story: 'Someone has [been] waiting a long time for this day, years of torment from his dad [but now] he gets his moment.' The post featured a photo of a young Romeo in an Arsenal kit. Beckham also shared two additional images of Romeo in Arsenal shirts from years past, before issuing a warning: 'Don't get used to it mate, United will be back next year and sorry for the torment over all these years. Oh and thanks for the 7am call this morning [to say] 'Dad I woke up a champion.''
Romeo's Arsenal Loyalty
Romeo was less than two years old when Arsenal last won the title in 2004. This season, the Gunners ended their drought, sparking celebrations from fans worldwide. Romeo shared his own photos on Instagram, including one of him in an Arsenal goalkeeper shirt and gloves as a youngster, and another showing the Bukayo Saka scarf he wore while celebrating the title win.
Not everyone was congratulatory. Phil Neville, who played alongside Beckham at Manchester United, replied to Romeo's post: 'You're a Man Utd fan Romeo.'
How Romeo Became an Arsenal Fan
David Beckham previously revealed that Romeo chose to support Arsenal partly due to the treatment he received from former manager Arsene Wenger. Speaking to former teammate Rio Ferdinand, Beckham recalled: 'We walked in, amazing seats. Sat in the director's box. Lunch was unbelievable before the game - it was like wagyu, full on, everything. So we walk in, I'm sat there and then Arsene walks in the room and he comes straight over to the table, introduces himself to Romeo, and he says, 'Come with me son.' So he takes him down to the changing room, meets all the players, gives him a shirt, signed, takes him onto the pitch, walks him back up to the table and then gives him an Arsenal cashmere scarf, and that was it. It was done. I've tried to change his mind since but impossible.'
David Beckham, now 51, has three sons: Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, as well as daughter Harper. While David is a Manchester United legend, his family's football loyalties are divided, with Romeo firmly in the Arsenal camp.
