Robson Questions Rashford's United Mindset Despite Barcelona Resurgence
Manchester United icon Bryan Robson has delivered a pointed critique of Marcus Rashford, suggesting there must be "something wrong" with the forward if he couldn't find enjoyment playing for the Red Devils. This criticism comes despite Rashford's current impressive form during his loan spell at Barcelona.
Thriving in Spain After United Struggles
Rashford has experienced a remarkable career revival since joining Barcelona on loan during the summer transfer window. The England international has contributed significantly to the Catalan side's campaign, netting 10 goals and providing 13 assists as Barcelona competes for both the La Liga title and Champions League glory.
This resurgence follows a challenging period at Manchester United where Rashford fell out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach famously claimed he would rather place his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench than include Rashford, citing perceived effort issues. The forward also lost his coveted number 10 shirt to Matheus Cunha during the summer months.
Robson's Blunt Assessment
Despite Rashford's Spanish success, Robson expressed bewilderment at the player's previous Manchester United struggles. "Marcus Rashford, as a player, I can't understand it," the United legend told Boyle Sports. "When you're at Manchester United and everybody's saying he's lost confidence and belief in his own form at the club, and he goes and says he's starting to enjoy his football again at Aston Villa."
Robson's comments reference Rashford's apparent enjoyment of football away from Old Trafford, with the former captain adding: "If you can't enjoy your football at Manchester United, there's something wrong with you."
Potential Return Complications
The United great also raised concerns about Rashford's potential return to Manchester, questioning whether his attitude might negatively impact teammates. "I'm just not quite sure whether I'd bring Marcus back in just because the lads could go, 'Well, what about his attitude?'" Robson stated.
He pointed to United's current attacking options as potential obstacles for Rashford's reintegration, mentioning Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount, and Patrick Dorgu as players who have contributed to the squad.
Uncertain Future Despite Barcelona Form
Rashford hasn't featured for Manchester United since December 2024, and Barcelona possess an option to sign him permanently for approximately £26 million at the season's conclusion. While the forward has reportedly expressed desire to make his Camp Nou move permanent, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick recently indicated uncertainty about Rashford's long-term future with the Spanish giants.
"Marcus' performances have been really good until now, but we have to manage it," Flick commented. "It's Deco's job and the club's job to work on next season, so we have to wait. We still have plenty more time, there are many months, many days, many weeks ahead of us, and that's how it is."
The situation presents a complex dilemma for both clubs and the player himself, with Rashford's impressive Barcelona form contrasting sharply with Robson's pointed questions about his previous Manchester United commitment and enjoyment.
