Andy Robertson has confirmed he is yet to open contract negotiations with Liverpool, with the left-back’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season. The Scotland captain is free to speak to foreign clubs from January 1 over a pre-contract agreement.
Robertson attracted interest from Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window after Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40m. However, the 30-year-old remained at Anfield and has started the last four matches under Arne Slot, including the Champions League win over Real Madrid and the Premier League defeat at Manchester City.
Despite his recent return to the side, Robertson’s long-term future remains uncertain. While he is understood to be open to extending his stay on Merseyside, talks have not yet begun. “Whatever happens will happen behind closed doors and I’m relaxed about the whole situation,” he said. “If it is my last year, then it’s my last year. If it’s not, then so be it.”
Robertson acknowledged the contract issue will soon dominate his thoughts. “I had a bit of a stressful summer in terms of decisions, and I’ve said to myself to just try and enjoy the next few months and then obviously it will start probably taking over my life. That’s what happens when you go into your last six months.”
