Andy Robertson Opens Up on Liverpool Role and Future Amid Kerkez Competition

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has candidly addressed his limited playing time this season and the competition with summer signing Milos Kerkez, following a standout performance in the FA Cup. Robertson played a pivotal role in Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Friday night, scoring the opening goal and providing an assist for Mohamed Salah at Molineux.

Robertson's Season of Reduced Minutes and Transfer Speculation

The Scotland international has made just 27 appearances this campaign, with only 14 starts across all competitions. In the Premier League, he has been given only five starts, leading to speculation about his future, including interest from Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window. Robertson's contract at Anfield is set to expire in the summer, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his position at the club.

Robertson's reduced role is largely attributed to the arrival of Milos Kerkez last summer, who has often been preferred as the first-choice left-back. This has seen Robertson frequently serve as the second option in that position, a shift from his previous status as a regular starter.

Robertson's Response to Competition and Motivation

Despite the challenges, Robertson emphasized his commitment to Liverpool in an interview with BBC Sport. He stated, "I am not sure I have got a point to prove in a Liverpool shirt. I think the fans know I give everything every time I come on the pitch and I hope they believe that. I have done that for nine years now so it's not really that, it's just when you get on the pitch you want to enjoy it."

He also discussed how he has managed the competition with Kerkez, noting that such scenarios are not new in his career. Robertson said, "It is what it is, Milos is a fantastic left-back, had an unbelievable season last season at Bournemouth and has taken a little bit of time to settle in to a big club, which everyone does. The club has to move forward, the lads that have been here for so long, we are not getting any younger, we are in our 30s now and the replacements have to come in."

Looking Ahead: Ambition and Acceptance

Robertson expressed a pragmatic view on the situation, highlighting the club's need for progression and his acceptance of the changing dynamics. He added, "We know that, that is what we want for the club. We want them to be ambitious and we want them to go and compete in all fronts and you have to accept it. I have had competition my whole career, it's no different this season. Obviously I have not played as many games as I would have liked but that is part of football."

This performance against Wolves, where he contributed directly to two goals, underscores Robertson's continued value to the team, even as he navigates a season with fewer starts. His experience and leadership remain assets for Liverpool as they compete on multiple fronts.
