Australian snooker ace Neil Robertson has publicly criticised Ronnie O'Sullivan following the Englishman's comments about Saudi Arabia's growing influence in the sport. The war of words comes just days before the start of the prestigious UK Championship in York.
Robertson, the 2010 world champion, took exception to O'Sullivan's suggestion that players were being 'bought' to compete in Saudi Arabia's new snooker event in Jeddah. The Rocket had claimed some professionals were 'selling their souls' by participating in the tournament.
Robertson Fires Back
'I completely disagree with Ronnie's comments,' Robertson told reporters. 'The Saudi event is great for snooker's global growth. Players aren't being bought - we're being given incredible opportunities to grow the game worldwide.'
The 41-year-old Melbourne native pointed out that O'Sullivan himself has competed in lucrative exhibitions around the world: 'Ronnie's happy to take the money elsewhere, so why single out Saudi Arabia?'
UK Championship Build-Up
The spat adds extra spice to the upcoming UK Championship, where both players will be among the favourites. Robertson is seeking his third UK title, while O'Sullivan aims for a record-extending eighth triumph.
'My focus is on winning in York,' Robertson added. 'But it's important to stand up for what's right for the sport's future.'
The Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters is scheduled for September 2024 in Jeddah, featuring a $2 million prize fund that includes a $500,000 top prize - the richest in snooker history.
