Robertson Confirms Liverpool Exit, No Contract Offer

Andy Robertson Announces Liverpool Departure After Nine Years

Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson has confirmed that his ninth season with the club will be his last, revealing that no formal contract offer was extended to him as he prepares to join Tottenham Hotspur. The Scotland international disclosed that his decision to leave was reached after extensive discussions with key figures at Anfield, which concluded without a new deal being presented.

Robertson's Candid Admission on Contract Situation

Robertson stated clearly, "It's not like I've knocked back a contract or anything, there was no contract on the table. It was a conversation we all had." He emphasized that his primary motivation was the desire to continue playing regular football, saying, "I want to play, so that was where the discussions came. I believe I've still got the ability to play, and I think I have showed that this season."

The 32-year-old left-back acknowledged that he had contemplated leaving during both the summer and January transfer windows, but ultimately decided to stay until now. He described the conversations with the club as "open and honest," maintaining that his relationship with the owners remains positive and intact.

End of an Era at Anfield

Robertson's departure marks the continuation of a significant transition period for Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah also having announced his exit earlier this year. Reflecting on this changing landscape, Robertson noted, "These eras come to an end. That's what's happening - and in the next couple of years some of the other lads will leave in terms of their contracts and things like that."

He added emotionally, "All good things come to an end. I've been here nine years and I couldn't have dreamed of it being any better with all the trophies I've won. To stay at a club like this for nine years is something I'm incredibly proud of."

Tottenham Emerge as Frontrunners for Signature

Tottenham Hotspur are currently leading the race to secure Robertson's services following his Liverpool exit. The defender featured in Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield on Saturday, receiving a massive ovation from fans at the final whistle alongside Salah.

Robertson expressed deep appreciation for the Liverpool supporters, saying, "[The fans' reception meant] everything. They have been amazing with me since day one, so they mean a lot to me. They know that, so it was nice to get my name sung."

World Cup Timeline and Future Plans

The Scottish captain revealed his intention to settle his long-term future before captaining Scotland at their first World Cup since 1998, with their opening match against Haiti scheduled for June 14. "I will be looking to sort my future out sooner rather than later," Robertson confirmed. "I don't want to be going to the World Cup with anything hanging over my head."

He remains focused on finishing the season strongly with Liverpool, stating, "I am fully focused on getting Liverpool to where I believe they belong, so I can leave them in the best place possible." Robertson's trophy-laden spell at Anfield included two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup in 2019, two Carabao Cups, and the FA Cup.

As he prepares for his next chapter, Robertson reflected on his Liverpool legacy: "I'm just honoured, first of all, to play for this club, but to win all those trophies and to be spoken about the way I've seen over the last couple of days is really pleasing and emotional for me and my family."
