Rio Ferdinand Urges Manchester United to Sign Two Midfielders This Summer
Rio Ferdinand Urges Man Utd to Sign Two Midfielders

Rio Ferdinand has publicly advised Manchester United to make the acquisition of two midfielders their top priority in the upcoming summer transfer window, alongside recruiting in two additional key positions.

United's Current Situation and Future Plans

The Red Devils currently occupy third place in the Premier League table with seven matches remaining, following a notable revival under interim head coach Michael Carrick. This resurgence has positioned them strongly in the battle to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

Carrick's audition for the permanent managerial role has been highly impressive, with United suffering just a single defeat since his arrival and securing seven victories. However, it remains uncertain whether the Old Trafford hierarchy will offer him the full-time position.

Nevertheless, Ferdinand is already looking ahead to the summer and how United can enhance their team, regardless of who is in charge next season.

Ferdinand's Transfer Blueprint

Speaking on his show, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender articulated his vision: ‘If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that’s a realistic transfer window.’

He elaborated on his specific priorities:

  • Two Central Midfielders: One established starter and a younger prospect to be integrated gradually alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.
  • A Forward: A younger attacker who would serve as backup to the existing options.
  • A Full-Back: To bolster defensive and wide options.

Ferdinand emphasized: ‘That’s it. I know you can say you want ten new players and most positions can be improved but I don’t think you need a huge revamp, it’s still a lot but that’s realistic.’

Transfer Targets and Speculation

Manchester United have been linked with numerous players since January, including Newcastle's Sandro Tonali. Recent reports suggest that if Newcastle fail to achieve a top-five finish, financial constraints may necessitate significant sales, such as Tonali, to free up funds for transfers and wages.

However, Ferdinand believes United should focus on a different target: former Newcastle and current Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson.

He explained: ‘Beginning of the season everyone was talking about [Carlos] Baleba, he seems to have gone off the boil a little bit form wise. Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player.’

Ferdinand praised Anderson's character and suitability: ‘I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I think he’d be a good addition to the squad.’

He outlined the ideal midfielder profile for United: ‘But I just think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team. Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes.’

Concluding with a hint of secrecy, he added: ‘But I think there are a few other young guns out there who I won’t mention their names yet because I don’t want anyone else to get on that scent.’
