Harry Redknapp has ruled out a sensational return to Tottenham, despite mounting pressure on under-fire head coach Igor Tudor. The 78-year-old, who led Spurs to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2011, admitted he would love to go back but believes it is unlikely.
Tudor’s stint has been disastrous since replacing Thomas Frank last month, losing all four matches in charge. Defeats to Arsenal, Fulham, Crystal Palace, and a 5-2 Champions League thrashing by Atletico Madrid have left Spurs 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
Speaking at the Cheltenham Festival, Redknapp said: “I’ve been asked a few times if I’d go back to Spurs and it’s probably not going to happen, is it? Would I go back? Of course I would, but I doubt very much it’s going to happen.” He added that the club had not been in touch and that his focus was on his horse in the Gold Cup.
Reports suggest several Tottenham players have grown disillusioned with Tudor’s methods, labelling his approach as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘borderline mocking’. The Croatian’s decision to substitute goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after a catastrophic 16-minute spell against Atletico has further strained relations within the squad.
Spurs face a crucial trip to Liverpool on Sunday, with fears growing that the club could suffer relegation to the Championship for the first time in 49 years. Redknapp expressed hope that both Tottenham and his former club West Ham would avoid the drop.
