Real Madrid's Medical Blunder: Mbappe's Wrong Knee Scanned in Botched Injury Assessment
Real Madrid Scanned Mbappe's Wrong Knee in Injury Error

Real Madrid have been left red-faced following a significant medical blunder that saw star forward Kylian Mbappe's wrong knee scanned, delaying his recovery from an injury and keeping him out of action for nearly a month. The error occurred during a botched attempt to diagnose and treat the 27-year-old French captain's knee issue, which could have been resolved much sooner.

Botched Scan and Delayed Diagnosis

In early December, towards the end of Xabi Alonso's tenure as manager, Mbappe experienced pain in his left knee. However, Real Madrid's medical team performed an MRI scan on his right knee instead, finding no problems. This mistake led to a prolonged period of uncertainty and frustration for the player, who was left on the bench for Los Blancos' 2-1 Champions League loss at home to Manchester City.

Impact on Playing Time and Recovery

Despite the misdiagnosis, Mbappe played in Real Madrid's next three matches before the winter break, but only made a brief cameo appearance in their 3-2 Spanish Super Cup defeat to Barcelona in January. After a short spell back in the team, he missed five games while the issue was finally rectified. Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports that while no medical staff were sacked over the error, Niko Mihic returned as head of the first-team's medical services.

Mbappe is now regaining his match sharpness, having last played a full 90 minutes in mid-February. He made two substitute appearances before the international break and is set to feature for France this week. Speaking at an event in Paris, Mbappe expressed his emotions: "There was a lot of frustration, a lot of anger, and then also some anxiety at one point. I had reached a stage where I didn't know what was wrong with me. I didn't go through that period in the best way. I wasn't the happiest player in the world. But I'm happy now because it's truly behind me. It's all gone."

Context of Knee Problems at Real Madrid

This incident adds to a concerning trend at Real Madrid, which has seen a spike in knee problems in recent years. Rodrygo recently became the seventh player to suffer an ACL injury since 2023, ruling him out for the rest of the season and the upcoming World Cup. Mbappe addressed the speculation surrounding his injury, stating: "A lot of people gave a diagnosis, even though until not very long ago I didn't have one myself. From that point on it was easy to say that everything being said was wrong. I heard a lot of things - surgery, that I might not play again, that I wouldn't be able to play in the World Cup. It was all completely baseless."

He also explained his cautious approach to returning: "I wanted to be very cautious so as not to come back too quickly and risk a relapse or pick up another injury elsewhere. I wasn't afraid of re-injuring my knee, but of getting hurt somewhere else, because after four or five weeks without playing, you have to get all the other muscles going again. That's why I took my time."

As Mbappe works towards full fitness, this episode highlights the pressures and challenges in elite sports medicine, with Real Madrid's error serving as a stark reminder of the importance of accurate diagnosis in player welfare.
