Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 60 and Daryl Mitchell's 26 led New Zealand to a 204-run lead over England after a gripping third day saw 11 wickets fall. The pitch, which offered lateral movement and inconsistent bounce, proved challenging for batsmen.
England's collapse
England lost eight wickets for 130 runs in the first two sessions, leaving them with an 84-run deficit on first innings. Jofra Archer gave England early hope with two quick wickets, dismissing Tom Latham and Devon Conway in the space of 13 deliveries. However, New Zealand managed to stretch their lead to 204 for the loss of one more wicket by the close.
New Zealand's resilience
New Zealand showed resourcefulness and spirit, especially after losing Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson before the decider and having Blair Tickner subbed out with concussion on day two. Nathan Smith and Will O'Rourke dismissed Joe Root and Jacob Bethell, while Zak Foulkes proved a gamechanger after replacing Tickner. Foulkes bowled Ben Stokes for 15 and later dismissed Harry Brook, who made the slowest half-century of his Test career.
New Zealand's tail-enders ensured that a dropped catch by Ben Sears off Gus Atkinson counted for little. Nathan Smith finished with four for 91, including the wicket of Archer.
Ravindra and Mitchell's stand
Ravindra and Mitchell chiselled away for an unbroken 69-run stand, with Ravindra in princely form. England need seven more wickets on day four and for another lurch in conditions come the chase.
