A rat caused a brief stoppage during Wales's World Cup qualifier against Belgium at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday night. The rodent appeared on the pitch in the second half, prompting an unsuccessful attempt by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to catch it before Wales player Brennan Johnson ushered it off the field. The rat then slipped past a ball boy and disappeared behind the referee review monitor.
Wayne Nash, Cardiff City's head of operations, described the incident as unprecedented in his 36 years at the club. 'We've had a stray dog on the pitch but this was something new, a freak of nature,' he said. Nash noted that the stadium's proximity to allotments and railway sidings makes rat sightings occasional, but the club works closely with pest control partners to manage the issue.
Cardiff City defended its pest control policy, stating that rat bait stations are in place and stringent cleaning procedures are followed after matches. Nash emphasised that litter and leftover food are cleared immediately. 'They say you are never too far from a rat, especially in cities, and this one managed to get in,' he added, acknowledging the serious undertones of the incident.
