Marcus Rashford Reunites with Wayne Rooney Amid Barcelona Transfer Speculation
Marcus Rashford enjoyed a heartfelt reunion with former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney at St. James' Park, just as Barcelona weigh up making his loan move permanent for a reported £26million. The England international, currently on loan at the Catalan giants, made a point of greeting Rooney, United's all-time leading scorer, before Barcelona's Champions League clash against Newcastle United.
Warm Exchange at St. James' Park
The 28-year-old forward, who came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw, shared a brief but warm exchange with Rooney and former England colleague Daniel Sturridge pitchside. The trio embraced and shared a laugh before Rashford headed to the dressing room, marking their first public meeting since Rooney's pointed comments about the player's performances last year.
Rooney's Previous Criticism
This reunion comes nearly five months after Rooney questioned Rashford's displays at Old Trafford, following the forward's loan switch to Barcelona. Rashford had suggested his difficulties at United stemmed from an "inconsistent environment," but Rooney countered this explanation on his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show.
Rooney stated: "I think the environment hasn't been right, but that is down to yourself. If you are not playing well or you get left out of the team, it is easier to blame the environment, whether that is right or wrong. I think that comes from how you apply yourself. In games we have seen with Marcus where we know he can do more, we know he can run more - that is nothing to do with an environment."
Rashford's Barcelona Future
Rashford's current employers are seriously considering activating a £26million clause to make his loan move permanent this summer. The forward, who scored twice against Newcastle earlier in the campaign, was initially loaned to Aston Villa in January 2025 by former United boss Ruben Amorim before his temporary transfer to Barcelona.
Barcelona officials have reportedly drawn up contingency plans should the deal collapse, but Rashford's performances in Catalonia have impressed the hierarchy. The reunion with Rooney adds a poignant layer to the ongoing narrative surrounding Rashford's career trajectory and his potential permanent departure from Manchester United.
