Robert Lewandowski has announced his departure from Barcelona, potentially boosting Marcus Rashford's chances of securing a permanent move to the Spanish club. The 37-year-old Polish striker will leave after four trophy-laden years when his contract expires in June.
Lewandowski's Impact and Departure
Lewandowski, who has yet to decide on his next club but intends to continue playing, starred alongside Rashford this season as Barcelona successfully defended the La Liga title. Speaking in an Instagram post, he said: "After four years full of challenges and hard work, it's time to move on. I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete."
The veteran forward joined Barcelona in July 2022 from Bayern Munich in a deal worth up to €50 million (£43 million). He has scored 119 goals in 191 appearances, winning seven domestic trophies, including three La Liga titles.
Rashford's Loan Spell
Rashford is on loan from Manchester United, with Barcelona holding an option to sign him permanently for £26 million when the summer transfer window opens. The Englishman has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists during his spell at the Camp Nou, primarily playing as a left winger but capable of playing through the middle.
Although Barcelona intend to sign a new striker this summer, Rashford has proven he can help fill the goalscoring void left by Lewandowski. Manager Hansi Flick's side are interested in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.
Rashford's Desire to Stay
Rashford is desperate for a permanent move and remarked after scoring in Barcelona's 2-0 win against Real Madrid: "I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay." Barcelona have also explored extending his loan, but the player prefers a permanent deal.
Lewandowski's departure leaves Ferran Torres as Barcelona's only recognised striker ahead of the 2026-27 season. The Polish star has lucrative offers from MLS club Chicago Fire, Saudi Arabian teams like Al-Hilal, and Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan.
Rashford's potential permanent signing could be a key move for Barcelona as they look to maintain their dominance in La Liga and compete in European competitions.
