Rangers have been forced to delay the Ibrox squad’s return for pre-season following the appointment of Derek McInnes.
Former boss Danny Rohl had ordered his players to report back to their Auchenhowie base on Monday to begin preparation work ahead of the new campaign. But they’ve now been told to hold off until Thursday, when they will meet new gaffer McInnes for the first time.
The 54-year-old remains in the US, where he had been enjoying a family holiday. He was also spotted in amongst thousands of jubilant Tartan Army footsoldiers in Boston as he cheered on Scotland during last week’s opening World Cup victory over Haiti. It's expected he'll be back at the Gillette Stadium tomorrow night to see Steve Clarke's side face Morocco.
In the meantime, Record Sport understands the ex-Aberdeen, Killie and Hearts boss has been holding detailed discussions with Gers’ American chairman Andrew Cavenagh as they begin planning the changes McInnes wants to make at the club.
He is expected back in Glasgow within the next 72 hours, when he will ramp up his analysis of the first-team group he has inherited from Rohl as well as the summer transfer targets he hopes to sign.
McInnes has agreed a three-year deal at Ibrox and will now be expected to take the club back to the heights it used to occupy back in the late 90s when he was a member of the league-winning squads built by Walter Smith and Dick Advocaat.
Rohl, meanwhile, has already started work in Austria after quitting his Ibrox post to take up a position at RB Salzburg.
