Rangers close gap on Celtic with St Mirren win

Rangers ended a seven-week winless run on the road with a 2-0 victory over St Mirren at the SMISA Stadium on Saturday night, moving to within a point of Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.

Ryan Naderi's first-half penalty and Dan Neil's strike after the break secured the three points, extending Rangers' unbeaten run to 12 games. The result means Derek McInnes' side head into the international break in strong form.

Away Day Relief in Paisley

Since beating Celtic at Parkhead in September, Rangers had not won away from home, having dropped points at Dundee and Hearts in the intervening seven weeks. The victory against the Buddies put that travel sickness behind them.

Naderi opened the scoring from the penalty spot after James Penrice was fouled, with the spot-kick being the tenth penalty St Mirren have conceded this season. Neil then doubled the lead with a calm finish after the break.

Missed Chances and Late Drama

Rangers could have won by a larger margin, with Raskin almost adding a third with 20 minutes remaining, only for St Mirren goalkeeper Chapman to make a stunning fingertip save. At the other end, Pandur denied Luke Thomas, and Calvin Ramsay could not convert the rebound.

Substitute Tochi Chukwuani also passed up a golden opportunity, sliding an effort wide when he ought to have hit the target. Despite the wastefulness in front of goal, the two-goal cushion allowed McInnes to make four changes from the bench.

St Mirren, managed by Craig McLeish, rarely troubled Rangers and remain eighth in the league, with Celtic up next for the Buddies after the break.
