Liam Rosenior has dismissed speculation linking Enzo Fernández with a move away from Chelsea, insisting the midfielder’s long-term future lies at Stamford Bridge. Reports in France had suggested Paris Saint-Germain were targeting the Argentina international as part of a summer midfield rebuild, while Real Madrid are also said to be interested. However, Rosenior made clear he is unfazed by the transfer gossip.
“It means nothing to me,” said the Chelsea head coach. “When you’re a world-class player, there’s always going to be speculation. He’s been outstanding in the time I’ve worked with him.” Rosenior highlighted Fernández’s commitment, noting he played through illness in the 1-0 win over Brentford last Saturday. Fernández’s contract runs until 2032 and Chelsea have no intention of selling.
The 25-year-old is a doubt for Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Pafos after being ill, although he trained on Tuesday. Rosenior must decide whether to rotate his squad, with a gruelling schedule and injuries taking their toll. Tosin Adarabioyo is ruled out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury, while a sickness bug has affected the camp.
There was a surprise at training when Axel Disasi joined the group after previously training away from the first team. Disasi is ineligible for the Champions League and likely to leave this month, but Rosenior has given him a “clean slate”. Raheem Sterling remains out of favour. Rosenior refused to discuss interest in Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet.
Despite Chelsea’s mid-table position in the Champions League league phase, Rosenior is optimistic. The club have won the competition twice after mid-season managerial changes, in 2012 and 2021. “Hopefully third time lucky,” he said. “I never limit the ambitions of my group.”
