PSG star Kvaratskhelia out for season with ACL injury

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Tuesday night’s Champions League match against Barcelona, a blow that is likely to rule the winger out for the remainder of the season.

The Georgia international appeared to twist his knee just before the hour mark and was helped off the pitch by medical staff. PSG went on to win 4-2, with goals from Desire Doue, Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz, leaving them top of the Champions League League phase after winning all three of their games so far.

Injury Confirmed by Club

PSG confirmed the extent of the injury on their official website on Wednesday morning. “Having suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during yesterday’s match against FC Barcelona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set to undergo surgery in the coming days,” the club wrote.

Kvaratskhelia has been a key figure for PSG, who have won the last two Champions League titles. He won the penalty that led to PSG’s equaliser against Arsenal in last year’s final in Budapest and scored in the team’s 5-0 win over Inter as they claimed their first Champions League in 2025. So far this season, he has scored twice and provided one assist in 11 games in all competitions.

Additional Injury Concerns

PSG also suffered a double injury worry when striker Ousmane Dembélé was forced to leave the pitch in the first half, later joined by club captain Marquinhos. The club have confirmed that both players have suffered thigh injuries and will receive treatment over the “coming weeks”.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, PSG boss Luis Enrique said: “I am not the doctor. I am the coach. The three injuries is the worst part of the game today. We will have to wait for the tests tomorrow. They are three very important players, so it's really bad news, of course, but that's football.”

The French giants will now have to try to retain the title without Kvaratskhelia. They are next in European action when they travel to take on Villarreal on Tuesday, 3 November (8pm kick-off).
