Premier League Fixtures Altered for 2026/27 Season Due to FIFA Calendar Changes

The 2025/26 Premier League season is still underway, but plans for the 2026/27 campaign are already sparking controversy as leaked details reveal significant fixture changes. According to reports, the Premier League has been forced into adjustments due to FIFA's unilateral decisions on the international football calendar, impacting traditional match schedules.

Easter Weekend Matches Cancelled

In a major shift, Premier League clubs will not play over the Easter weekend in the 2026/27 season. This change stems from FIFA altering the dates of the March international break, which will now encompass Good Friday on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29, 2027. As a result, no Premier League or Sky Bet Championship matches are expected during this period, breaking with long-standing traditions.

The Daily Mail reports that fixtures will resume with the FA Cup quarter-finals on April 3, 2027, following the break. Most international games during this window are likely to be scheduled for Saturday and Tuesday, further compressing the domestic football calendar.

Lack of Consultation and Fixture Pressures

It is reported that domestic leagues, including the Premier League, were not consulted by FIFA before these changes were implemented. This move comes amid increasing fixture pressures in the game, with critics arguing it adds to the strain on players and disrupts fan expectations. This latest decision follows other tradition-defying changes, such as the reduced Boxing Day schedule this season, where only one top-flight fixture was played on December 26.

Manchester United's match against Newcastle United was the sole game on Boxing Day this year, with most matches shifted to December 27. However, the Premier League has confirmed a return to a more familiar Boxing Day schedule next season, as Boxing Day will fall on a Saturday rather than a Friday, offering some relief to traditionalists.

Extended September Break Confirmed

In addition to the Easter changes, it has been confirmed that the Premier League and Championship will pause following September 19, 2026, and not restart until October 10, 2026. This extended September break was approved by the FIFA Council in March 2023 and is designed to accommodate international commitments while adding an extra week of domestic football later in the calendar.

The fixture adjustments highlight ongoing tensions between domestic leagues and global governing bodies like FIFA, as they navigate crowded schedules and evolving demands in modern football.
