Paul Pogba Reveals Doping Ban Struggles and Renewed Outlook at Monaco

Former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has spoken candidly about the 18-month doping suspension that sidelined him from professional football, sharing how the ordeal reshaped his perspective on the sport and life itself.

The Ban and Its Aftermath

Pogba was provisionally suspended after a random test following Juventus' opening match of the 2023-24 season. Initially handed a four-year ban, it was later reduced to 18 months on appeal in October. The 32-year-old has since resumed his career, signing with Monaco and appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, where he expressed a mission to maximise his remaining playing years.

During the ban, Pogba faced severe restrictions, including being barred from training with Juventus or even entering their facilities. He recounted, "I wasn't allowed to go inside. I was watching the stadium like this every day with my kids telling me, 'Papi, when are you going to go to the game?'" This isolation, he noted, was one of the most challenging aspects, as he could only train alone at home or elsewhere, unable to participate in practice matches to maintain sharpness.

Emotional Toll and Personal Growth

Pogba admitted that the assumption he was a drug cheat was particularly painful, but he believes the experience has strengthened him. "I think that's one of the things that got me most. It made me a better, more experienced person. And to be careful, not to trust everybody," he reflected, adding that this chapter is now part of his life story.

Now back on the pitch, Pogba emphasises a changed approach to football. "I'm grateful to be back and play football again, after everything that happened. I see football totally different. I enjoy myself. I want to enjoy it," he said. At Monaco, he aims to leverage his experience to support the younger team while savouring the moment, stating, "The past is gone. We can only live the moment."

Looking Ahead with Monaco

Pogba's move to Monaco marks a fresh start, where he hopes to contribute as one of the squad's older, more seasoned players. His focus is on enjoying the game and helping the team progress, having missed two years of action and watching matches from afar.
