Pochettino Rules Out Spurs Return, Backs Club to Avoid Relegation

Mauricio Pochettino has once again distanced himself from speculation linking him with a return to Tottenham Hotspur, firmly stating his commitment to the United States men's national team. The Argentine coach, who took charge of the US in 2024, will remain in his role at least through the 2026 World Cup, with his contract set to expire in August of that year.

No Contact from Tottenham or Real Madrid

Speaking to reporters ahead of a friendly match against Portugal, Pochettino clarified that he has received no approaches from Tottenham Hotspur or Real Madrid regarding managerial positions. He emphasised that his "full focus" is on leading the US team in the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosted on home soil.

"I think everyone knows that I am committed with the national team here," Pochettino said, addressing the persistent rumours. His tenure at Spurs from 2014 to 2019 included some of the club's most successful periods in recent history, making him a frequent subject of return talks as Tottenham have struggled this season.

Future with US Team Remains Open

While Pochettino is contracted through the 2026 World Cup, he left the door open for a potential extension with the US Soccer Federation. "Who knows what is going to happen," he remarked. "We are open. We don't have a contract for the future. But why not? If we are happy and the federation is happy, it's only about to see ... Never say never in football."

However, he stressed that discussions about his future will wait until after the World Cup, prioritising the tournament preparations for now.

Confidence in Tottenham's Survival

Despite Tottenham's precarious position in the Premier League—hovering just one point above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining—Pochettino expressed strong confidence that his former club will avoid the drop. "I am sure they're going to stay up, with coach or without coach," he asserted.

He cited the quality of the players and the support of the fans as key factors that will help Spurs secure their top-flight status. "Because of the players, because I think they have unbelievable players, and it's a club with fans that are going to make everything to create that energy to win," Pochettino explained. "Of course, that is going to be tough, because the energy and the dynamics is difficult ... But if you ask me about that club, it's a club that I really care [about], and for sure, I really trust that [they're] going to stay in Premier League."

Spurs Close to Appointing New Manager

In related news, Tottenham are reportedly close to appointing Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, with talks advancing and a long-term contract on the table. This move underscores the club's efforts to stabilise their situation amid the relegation battle, independent of Pochettino's availability.

Pochettino's comments come at a critical time for both the US team and Tottenham, highlighting his dual focus on international duties and his enduring connection to the Premier League club. His unwavering support for Spurs' survival, coupled with his clear commitment to the US national team, sets the stage for an intriguing period ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
