Emmanuel Petit Accuses Kylian Mbappe of Fostering Selfishness at Real Madrid
Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has launched a blistering critique of Kylian Mbappe, alleging that the French superstar has introduced a culture of selfishness into the Real Madrid dressing room. This accusation comes in the wake of Real Madrid's dramatic Champions League quarter-final elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Champions League Heartbreak and Petit's Scathing Analysis
Real Madrid's European campaign ended in anguish with a 6-4 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich. The thrilling second leg at the Allianz Arena saw the Spanish giants concede two late goals after midfielder Eduardo Camavinga received a contentious red card in the 86th minute.
Petit, working as a pundit for French broadcaster RMC, did not hold back in his assessment. "It's not solely Mbappe's fault," Petit stated. "But his arrival filled the Real Madrid dressing room with selfishness. It's a fiasco."
He pointed to a stark contrast in form, noting that Real Madrid secured impressive victories over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid during Mbappe's recent absence from the starting lineup due to a minor knee injury. Since his return, the team has suffered four consecutive disappointing results.
Timing and Team Dynamics Under Scrutiny
Petit further highlighted the unfortunate timing for Mbappe, contrasting Real's struggles with the success of his former club, Paris Saint-Germain. "The timing really works against him," Petit said of his compatriot. "Since PSG have been playing like a team, they have been phenomenal. They are all united, like the fingers of a hand."
This is not the first time Petit has publicly criticised Mbappe. He has previously labelled him an attention-seeker and questioned his suitability for the France captaincy after Les Bleus' Euro 2024 semi-final loss to Spain.
Camavinga's Red Card and Post-Match Chaos
While focusing on Mbappe's influence, Petit conceded that Camavinga's sending-off was a more pivotal moment in the defeat. "If anyone needs to be blamed, it's Camavinga," he added. "His foul was catastrophic. At that point in the game, the red card was very harsh, but unfortunately the referee was simply applying the rules."
The match concluded in chaotic scenes, with Real Madrid's anguish boiling over into fury directed at referee Slavko Vincic. Several players, including Arda Guler, Antonio Rudiger, and Vinicius Jr, aggressively pursued the official after the final whistle. Guler's protests earned him a post-match red card.
Manager's Fury and Defending the Players
Beaten manager Alvaro Arbeloa was scathing in his post-match comments, accusing the referee of ruining the spectacle. "Obviously, you can't send off a player for something like that," Arbeloa told the Spanish press. "The referee didn't even know he had a card and he ruined a very exciting, very evenly matched tie."
He reiterated his frustration on TNT Sport, stating, "I think with the red card, everything was over. It is really unbelievable that you send off a player for this action... We feel really, really upset, angry and disappointed."
The fallout from this dramatic exit raises serious questions about team chemistry at Real Madrid, with Petit's comments placing Mbappe firmly at the centre of the controversy.
