Pellegrini's Stunning Strike Seals Derby Glory for Roma

Lorenzo Pellegrini ended his goal drought in style as Roma defeated Lazio 2-0 in the Serie A derby, giving Claudio Ranieri his fifth derby win as Roma coach. The Roma captain and lifelong fan curled a superb opener from the edge of the area, before Alexis Saelemaekers finished a counterattack to double the lead after 18 minutes.

The win lifted pressure on Pellegrini, who had faced severe criticism from fans this season. Roma moved up to 10th place with their third win in five league matches, while Lazio remained fourth. Ranieri, Roma's third manager this season after Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric were sacked, has now won all five derbies he has overseen as coach.

Ranieri, who also won derbies in Milan, Turin and Genoa with Inter, Juventus and Sampdoria respectively, came out of retirement to restore order at Roma in November. His contract includes a move to an executive role after this season, where he will help choose the next coach.

Before kick-off, a car was set ablaze outside the Stadio Olimpico after being struck by fireworks as rival fans clashed. In other Serie A action, Cagliari came from behind to beat bottom-placed Monza 2-1, while Torino v Parma and Lecce v Genoa ended goalless.

In the French Super Cup, Ousmane Dembélé's stoppage-time goal gave Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Monaco, securing the trophy for the third consecutive season. PSG dominated with 27 chances but were kept at bay until Dembélé slotted home a pass from Fabián Ruiz in the 92nd minute. Gianluigi Donnarumma made key saves on his return from a facial injury.
