England football legend Paul Gascoigne has been admitted to intensive care after being found collapsed at home by a friend. The 58-year-old former Tottenham and Newcastle star was discovered semi-conscious in his bedroom in Poole, Dorset, and is now in a stable condition recovering in an acute medical unit.
Gascoigne's friend Steve Foster, who found him, said: 'He would like to thank everyone for the support he’s received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.' Foster drove Gascoigne to hospital, adding: 'Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now.' He is expected to remain there for several days.
Gascoigne, known affectionately as Gazza, is one of England's best-loved sports stars, having shot to fame during the 1980s and 1990s. He helped Tottenham to the FA Cup in 1991 and was a key part of England's run to the semi-finals at Italia 90, where his tears after a booking became an enduring image. He also starred at Euro 96, scoring a famous goal against Scotland.
His international career ended with 10 goals in 57 appearances after being controversially overlooked for the 1998 World Cup. Gascoigne also played for Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton and Burnley before retiring.
