Football legend Pat Jennings is auctioning off his collection of iconic football shirts, with the sale taking place on Wednesday. The former Tottenham and Arsenal goalkeeper, now 80, said it was 'the right time' to sell, adding that he hopes the shirts 'bring some joy to football fans who still remember me'.
The collection includes shirts from Jennings' own career, such as his 1967 Tottenham FA Cup Final shirt (£6,000-8,000) and his 1978 Arsenal FA Cup Final shirt (£6,000-8,000). Also up for grabs are shirts swapped with fellow stars, including George Best's Northern Ireland No.7 shirt (£4,000-6,000) and a Liam Brady 1980 FA Cup Final shirt (£8,000-12,000).
Jennings explained that most of the shirts had been on display at White Hart Lane until the stadium closed in 2017. He collected them in plastic boxes and they have remained stored ever since. 'I thought a couple of months ago that it was time for somebody else to enjoy it,' he said.
David Convery of Budds Auctions, which is handling the sale, said: 'We are honoured to be entrusted with selling the legendary and prized collection of Pat Jennings. We hope that this single owner auction will offer many different collectors the opportunity to own a piece of history from one of the greatest goalkeepers in football's history.'
Jennings, who played over 1,000 first-class games and represented Northern Ireland, joked that he would not attend the auction or follow it online, but would wait for a phone call at the end of the day to learn the results.
