Burnley secured their first Premier League win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Turf Moor. Goals from new captain Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony lifted the mood after a nervy opening, giving the Clarets hope of avoiding another relegation battle.
Cullen opened the scoring two minutes into the second half, curling into the bottom corner after a clever flick from Anthony. The goal was subject to a lengthy VAR check for offside but stood. Anthony sealed the win late on, latching onto a sublime pass from Cullen and rounding the goalkeeper to finish.
Manager Scott Parker praised his side's performance, saying: 'I'm absolutely buzzing for the players and the fans. We needed to make these fans believe, and our players gave them that belief.' Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris acknowledged the challenge of the Premier League, adding: 'It's not a surprise for me. You enjoy when you win, but you won't be too negative when you lose.'
The first half was a turgid affair with only one shot on target, a miscue from Eliezer Mayenda that Martin Dubravka saved. Burnley had a goal disallowed for a foul by Lyle Foster, and the game was briefly halted due to floodlight issues. However, the home side's discipline and work rate saw them through, with Maxime Estève suffering cramp after a crucial interception.
