Lucas Paqueta reveals Man City transfer heartbreak and psychological toll
Paqueta opens up on Man City transfer collapse

West Ham United playmaker Lucas Paqueta has spoken candidly about the profound personal and professional impact of his failed transfer to Manchester City, revealing the episode left him requiring psychological support.

The Dream Move That Collapsed

In a heartfelt interview, the Brazilian international explained how his proposed £80 million move to the Premier League champions collapsed in August 2023 at the very last minute. The deal fell through when the Football Association charged him with spot-fixing, specifically investigating allegations he deliberately received yellow cards in four matches to enable friends and family to bet on them.

"I lost a leap in my career," Paqueta stated, reflecting on the missed opportunity to join Pep Guardiola's side after a superb debut season in England.

The Psychological Battle

The 28-year-old described the immense psychological strain he endured during the subsequent two-year investigation. "Psychologically, I think that's where I was most affected," he admitted to Brazilian TV. "The fear of this indecision, the uncertainty of my future."

Paqueta confirmed he sought professional help to cope with the situation, saying the support was crucial during a period where he felt unable to tell his side of the story. He was eventually cleared of the main charges in July 2025, a verdict that brought him immense relief.

"I'm happy, much lighter, since my victory," he said. "That fear is behind me."

A Future Return to Flamengo

Looking ahead, the former AC Milan and Lyon star revealed his strong desire to eventually return to his boyhood club, Flamengo. He confirmed having conversations with Flamengo head coach and friend Filipe Luís about a potential move, including discussions as recently as the summer of 2025.

"I really expressed my desire to return," Paqueta said, acknowledging it was a difficult decision given his age and market value. However, he ultimately chose to respect his contract with West Ham, which runs until 2027, stating he has "enormous affection" for the London club that supported him.

Despite the setback, Paqueta has rediscovered his form, scoring four goals in four games at the start of the 2025/26 season and marking his return to the Brazilian national team with a goal at the Maracanã Stadium in September.
