Kobbie Mainoo may be relieved by Ruben Amorim's departure, but Michael Owen warns the midfielder now faces intensified pressure at Manchester United. The former United striker believes the 20-year-old must seize his opportunity under the next manager.
Mainoo did not start a single Premier League game under Amorim this season and was blocked from loan moves. He returned from a calf injury as a substitute in the Burnley draw, having played only 318 minutes this term.
'By the very fact that Amorim has gone, you'd think he's going to get a lot more opportunity, but now it's down to Mainoo,' Owen told Metro. 'Now it's all going to be squarely on his toes, and there's no hiding place or excuses.'
Owen suggested Mainoo must prove Amorim wrong. 'He's got to now prove Amorim was wrong by not playing him. He's probably going to get that opportunity, so we'll see.'
Mainoo is expected to stay at Old Trafford despite transfer speculation. His contract runs until 2027, with an option for an extra year. He declined a contract extension last year, but Amorim previously described him as 'the future of Manchester United'.
