Michael Owen Lauds Jurgen Klopp's Tactful Absence from Liverpool After Exit
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has publicly praised Jurgen Klopp for maintaining a respectful distance from the club since his departure in the summer of 2024, drawing a sharp contrast with the behaviour of legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. While Ferguson has remained a constant, watchful figure at Old Trafford since retiring in 2013, Owen believes Klopp's decision to largely stay away from Anfield demonstrates a high level of respect towards his successor, Arne Slot.
Contrasting Legacies: Klopp's Restraint Versus Ferguson's Presence
The England legend's remarks follow Klopp's comments in October last year, where he addressed the possibility of an Anfield comeback, stating it was theoretically feasible. Owen suggested that the near-constant presence of Sir Alex at United has significantly impacted the string of coaches who have attempted to succeed him, creating a challenging environment for those in the dugout.
Slot, who won the Premier League title in his debut season on Merseyside, has faced struggles this year, with many fans calling for his dismissal. Despite this, Klopp has watched from afar, only returning for a legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund earlier this month. Owen, now representing Casino.org, exclusively told Mirror Football:
"If you look down the East Lancs road, people have criticised Sir Alex Ferguson for over a decade, yet he says very little, rarely does interviews, and has never been disparaging to a Manchester United manager. He simply sits in the stand and watches his old team. In contrast, Jurgen Klopp doesn't do that—he doesn't return to sit in the director's box and look down on the manager."
Klopp's Professional Obligations and Respectful Stance
Owen elaborated that Klopp's current role at Red Bull often thrusts him in front of journalists, where he is frequently asked about Liverpool. He emphasised that Klopp likely wouldn't be making public statements about the club's state if not for these professional obligations. Owen noted:
"I don't think he wants to do that. But it's part of his job to handle the press, and people ask him. Overall, Jurgen Klopp has been very respectful towards the Liverpool manager. He was keen to back Slot and even started the song at Anfield."
Despite Slot gaining some breathing room after Liverpool's dramatic late win against Everton on Sunday, pressure on the Dutchman persists. Owen, who scored 158 goals in eight seasons at Anfield, speculated that Klopp could potentially return to the Liverpool dugout if Slot leaves this summer. However, he cautioned that such a scenario is more wishful thinking than reality, citing Klopp's initial reason for stepping down: a depletion of the energy needed to lead a top-tier club.
Fantasy Versus Reality: The Prospects of a Klopp Comeback
Owen remarked:
"I would say it's wishful thinking, but you never know. They say never go back. The Klopp era was an amazing, brilliant period for Liverpool, and many fans dream of his return. If he clicked his fingers and said he wanted to come back, Liverpool would face a big decision, especially as the current management isn't excelling. Once it's in your blood, it's hard to get out. I see Klopp potentially wanting to return to management, but he managed Liverpool for a long time and decided it was time to move on—you need immense energy to start fresh again. It would be fascinating, but more fantasy than reality."
This analysis underscores the delicate balance football legends must strike between their enduring connections to former clubs and the respect owed to their successors, a topic that continues to resonate deeply within the sport's community.
